Bathroom safety and home accessibility in Central Florida

Quick answer

HandyMangum makes homes safer and easier to get around for seniors, wheelchair and walker users, and anyone recovering from surgery. We install grab bars, shower seats and handheld showers, convert tubs to walk-in showers, build curbless (roll-in) showers, add handrails and threshold ramps, widen doorways and swap in easier hardware and lighting, all installed following ADA guidelines and fitted to the person who will use them. Many families call this aging in place: staying safely in your own home as needs change. Call or text (407) 699-1123 for a free estimate.

Raised toilet seats and safety frames

A few extra inches of height and something solid to push up from, without replacing the toilet.

Replacing a standard toilet with a taller bowl, about the height of a chair.

Learn more

Bidet seats and bidets

Washing seats that help people stay independent in the bathroom.

Where to start, room by room

Bathroom

Many falls at home happen here. Start with a grab bar by the toilet and one at the shower entry, then look at toilet height, a shower seat and a handheld shower. If getting over the tub wall is the problem, a tub-to-shower conversion fixes it for good.

Entry and outside steps

A handrail on the entry steps, a threshold ramp at the door and a video doorbell so no one has to hurry to answer it.

Halls and stairs

Rails on both sides of the stairs, brighter lighting and switches at both ends, and anti-slip treads on hard steps.

Bedroom and the path to the bathroom

Motion night lights from the bed to the toilet, a reachable switch by the bed and a clear, slip-resistant floor.

Doors throughout

Lever handles instead of knobs, offset hinges where a couple of inches will do, and full door widening where a wheelchair needs to get through.

Kitchen and laundry

Lever faucets, easy-grip cabinet pulls, better task lighting and outlets moved up where bending is hard.

A handyman for seniors, and for the families who look after them

A lot of what keeps an older adult safe at home is ordinary handyman work done with care: a grab bar where they already reach, a toilet that is not too low, a step they no longer have to climb, a light they can find at night. We have done this kind of work across Central Florida since 2020, and we take the time to watch how the person moves through the house before we suggest anything.

If you live out of town, we can work with you by phone, text and email, send photos of the finished work, and schedule around a caregiver's visits.

Just need grab bars?

For a grab-bar-only job, you can also book directly with Grab Bar Heroes, a HandyMangum company that does nothing but grab bars. When grab bars are part of a bigger safety update, HandyMangum handles the whole list in one visit.

For caregivers, occupational therapists and home health referrals

Many of our aging-in-place jobs start with an adult child, a caregiver, an occupational therapist (OT) or a home health team who has spotted a risk. We make that hand-off simple:

  1. Send the request

Call or text (407) 699-1123, email services@handymangum.com, or use the online request. Include the address, the best contact for scheduling and, with the client's permission, any OT notes.

  2. We follow the recommendation

If an OT has recommended heights, locations or a specific product, we install to that. If not, we start from ADA guidelines and adjust to the person.

  3. Written quote to the right person

The quote goes to whoever is paying or deciding, and we can copy the referring professional if the client agrees.

  4. Install and walk-through

We show the client (and the caregiver, if present) how everything works before we leave.

How we approach accessibility work

  • Installed following ADA guidelines, then fitted to the person who will use it
  • Bars and rails anchored into framing or into anchors rated for the load
  • A written quote before any work starts, and free estimates on every job
  • Licensed and insured, insured up to $1M, with a 1-year warranty
  • Our own team: uniformed employees and background-checked technicians
  • If any part of the job needs a permit or a state-licensed trade, such as new plumbing lines or new wiring, we tell you during the quote and that part is handled by properly licensed professionals.

Bathroom safety and accessibility questions

What is aging in place?

Aging in place means living in your own home safely and independently as you get older or as your mobility changes, usually with a few changes to the home such as grab bars, a taller toilet, a walk-in shower or wider doors.

How do I make a bathroom safe for an elderly parent?

Start with grab bars by the toilet and at the shower entry, a non-slip shower floor, a shower seat with a handheld shower, and a night light on the path from the bed. If stepping over the tub is hard, a tub-to-shower conversion removes the problem.

Do you follow ADA guidelines in homes?

Yes. We install following ADA guidelines for heights and clearances, then adjust to the person, since the ADA Standards are written for public places rather than private homes.

Can you work from an occupational therapist's recommendations?

Yes. Send the OT's notes with the request (with the client's permission) and we will install to them.

Does Medicare or insurance pay for this?

We cannot promise that any plan will pay, so please check before the work starts. Original Medicare generally does not pay for grab bars, bath seats, raised toilet seats or home changes like these; CMS treats them as convenience items rather than durable medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid waiver programs and veterans' programs do help with home modifications, so ask your plan directly. We give you a written, itemized quote and invoice you can share with them.

How do I get an estimate?

Estimates are free. Call or text (407) 699-1123, or send the online request with a few photos. We send a written quote before any work starts.
